“You’re too sensitive” is a phrase I heard all too often in my corporate career. And Mayim Bialik’s first comment in this video about the paperclips brought a tear to my eye. I am totally that guy. I buy coloured paperclips, they are metallic coloured paperclips, and sometimes I think about how sad I am to see them go because they feel like me. They are me.
When I left the corporate world to start my own coaching company I made sure to purchase brightly coloured pens and I limited the standard blue, black and red. For me the brightly coloured pens represented shaking off the shackles of a life I wasn’t happy in. The new pens represented me following my dreams, doing something fun, not conforming to things that made me feel crushed and soulless.
Too often (twice, which is too often) in my professional career I was called “too sensitive” or “Mr. Sensitive”. I was a highly effective employee, I moved up in organizations quickly. I received very good raises. I realized that this was happening because I was tapping into my sensitivity and anticipating the needs of those around me, including my leadership.
I have learned that my sensitivity is my super power. I learned that I could use my sensitivity to make a real difference in the world. I learned that I could use it to increase my intuition to know that sometimes what people are saying isn’t always what they mean. I love Mayim for this video.
Mayim Bialik, who used to star as Blossom in the 1990’s TV show also called “Blossom” and was in the hit series “The Big Bang Theory”, is now an avid YouTuber and posted this video about her own emotional sensitivity.
Interestingly, Mayim Bialik, now has a PhD in Neuroscience. What an inspirational person.
