Corporate Culture: Mongrel or Deliberate Approach?

What is the point of a Corporate Culture? Actually, this is almost a rhetorical question because corporate culture exists all the time. The question should be “What is the point of being deliberate about your Corporate Culture?”

The point is this… all companies have a culture. The more deliberate they can be about that culture the more likely they can increase the execution of company values, the connection of employees to the corporate vision and increase overall job satisfaction and retention.

We all know of Corporations (WestJet, Google, Apple) who have put much thought and effort into designing a corporate culture that provides purpose in the office, aligning every employee’s decisions with a simple, collective vision.

Having a clearly articulated vision that is prominently communicated to everyone we work with cultivates an intentional culture – an environment where people know why they do what they do, and love their work all the more for it.

Our vision is : “Change My Life Coaching will be the leading whole-life Coaching organization across Canada with every coaching program customized to the unique needs and desires of our clients.”

At Change My Life Coaching we have a very intentional culture that we have created to assist our clients and each other with the best tools to cultivate a more satisfying and purposeful life, and to help all of us weather life’s toughest storms.

We provide guidance and support for surfing change, easing suffering, and confidently stepping into our employee’s and client’s part of our mission and our part in their personal mission.

We feel that compassion and unity are the keys to the future and our vision has inspired us to be more than just a coaching company – we are a community that stands for helping those we serve to achieve even more of their dreams.

What does culture mean?

  • According to the dictionary culture is:
  • the quality in a person or society that arises from a concern for what is regarded as excellent in arts, letters, manners, scholarly pursuits, etc
  • development or improvement of the mind by education or training.
  • the behaviors and beliefs characteristic of a particular social, ethnic, or age group:

Corporate culture refers to the beliefs and behaviors that determine how a company’s employees and management interact and handle outside business transactions. Often, corporate culture is implied, not expressly defined, and develops organically over time from the cumulative traits of the people the company hires.

Why You Should Be Deliberate About a Corporate Culture

The Buddha’s last words were, “Make of yourself a light.” As a tribe, it’s our wish that we may all be lights for ourselves and each other in times that feel dark.

If you are not deliberate about your culture, you have an implied culture. As Ayn Rand says: “As a human being, you have no choice about the fact that you need a philosophy. Your only choice is whether you define your philosophy by a conscious, rational and disciplined process of thought and scrupulously logical deliberation, or, let your subconscious accumulate a junk heap of unwarranted conclusions, false generalizations, undefined contradictions, undigested slogans, unidentified wishes, doubts and fears – thrown together by chance but integrated into your subconscious into a kind of mongrel philosophy – infused into a single solid weight of self-doubt – like a ball and chain in the place where your minds wings should have grown.”

So what does an Awesome Culture look like?

Whether in your workplace, in an association you belong to, or with your family and friends – there is a culture currently in place. It exists whether it is deliberate or not. Our question is – why would you choose to not be deliberate about it?

Here are some ways to make your culture awesome:

  • Be deliberate about it
  • Ensure that connection is created between the employees and the company’s visions
  • Answer how the company can help the staff achieve their goals or vision
  • Intentionally and mindfully cultivate a culture of collaboration and appreciation
  • Inspire and allow your team to be creative, productive and innovative
  • Honour and build strong, trusted relationships
